During the Diablo 5 Forging the Next Era panel, which we watched at BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim, some of the game's devs spoke openly about the dark and
bleak setting that Diablo 5 will have. "I think that's really the tone, the atmosphere," said John Mueller, senior art director. "We're really doubling down on darkness, and what this means for the art team is we really get to explore all of what we learned from Diablo 4 and expand on it further. You know, that desolation that we're going to see in the world is really the setting for the survivors of this story [in Diablo 5 ]." Latest Videos From TechRadar Watch full video here:

This is something that I'm absolutely here for; Diablo games thrive and are
at their bleakest best when they embrace a dark and miserable tone and atmosphere, and help to cement the sense of place Sanctuary has, as well as the overarching richness of the story and narrative.

This doubling down, to the extent of embracing a setting of defeat and one where Sanctuary has fallen, already makes for a compelling starting point
that I can't wait for. You may like Diablo 5 announced and fully embraces bleakness, defeat, darkness, and hopelessness for Sanctuary, as Blizzard also confirms Diablo 4 is coming to Switch 2 Diablo 5's Sanctuary has become 'an outpost of hell' where 'humanity has fallen into ruin' which paints an incredibly bleak picture that I can't wait for Diablo 5 devs say that the game's player character will have a "unique bond" with Diablo himself

However, narrative director Jennifer Hepler went on to add that in the
process of "making Sanctuary so, so dark, [and] trying to double down on this darkness of Diablo winning in this apocalyptic setting; we still need to make Sanctuary a place that's worth defending."

So there's a balancing act in play here, then, with the darkness and hopelessness of the setting being somewhat offset by the devs still wanting
to make Sanctuary a "place that you want to save." Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. This narrative conflict and tension is something I'm really looking forward
