EARTH'S ELECTRICAL RINGS JUST SPRANG A LEAK: This story shows how little we know. On Oct. 18th, Earth's electrical ring current system sprang a leak, surprising researchers with a naked-eye arc of red light stretching from the USA to Europe. The phenomenon lasted for four hours even though geomagnetic activity was supposedly too weak to support it.
