• sed 4.9+ for Win32?

From Shawn Highfield@618:500/33 to Jas Hud on Sat Jan 6 14:28:08 2024
I run a ton of doorgames and i have goofy stuff like doorway launching
them or dosbox. I haven't had issues with ntvdm.

I had that kind of stuff going on when I ran Ezycom too. It was stable.
Now with Talisman everything is windows native except the door games.

windows 10 is not bloated and can run a bbs just fine.

Isn't there a "lite" distribution out there? I used to run TinyXP, it
was just enough XP to run a BBS, idled in 200 megs of RAM.

    Yes... LTSC.

I meant even "lite"er. TinyXP was missing Internet Explorer and all of
    the other built-in apps.

yeah they still make stripped down versions but stuff can be broken.
you can really just run windows 10 with 2 gigs of ram probably.

microsoft says min req is 2gb for win 10 64bit, 1gb for 32bit.

LTSC is probably as light as you will get. If your stuff is all console based and nothing 16-bit then maybe run Server Core?

well it was gutted. it had services removed.
I don't think THAT was even necessary because xp runs with very little resources as well. i think it got the attention of people who were hoping
for something they really didn't need.

i ran tinyxp and tiny7 before. then i figured fuck it, run the real thing. it's less broken and the requirements are low.

I ran my BBS on a mobile Core 2 duo and 3GB nicely on 32-bit Windows.
    Ran a Shoutcast station, too.

years ago i ran windows 7 on a netbook with like 1gig of memory and i was playing wow (warcraft) at work with the settings cranked down and tethered to my phone. it worked decent but i wouldn't do any raiding.

Depends on what you have. I ran the BBS on a 1 ghz Celeron with 512 MB
of RAM on it, and it ran surprisingly well. This was a HP Pavilion PC
from 1999-2000, the only real limitation with it was the HD interface
    maxxed out at ATA-33.

Doesn't Support Windows 7. Win 10 is too bloated for just a BBS os.

My board has remained on XP for decades now for that reason and how NTVDM
became broken either in Vista or 7. I can't prove it but am convinced it is.

Weird stuff like some doors crashing that never crashed before, mailer
inexplicably closing... none of these problems happen on the XP instance.

    Interesting, im running Searchlight (1999 - 16bit) under 32bit Windows 10 on
64 bit Hypervisor with virtual comm ports just fine... :-)
