Smutware is now available in the file areas. As the name makes clear, this collection of files is suitable for adults only.

A large portion of the content on many BBSs was of the "GIF of a girl in a bikini" variety, with many BBSs going farther and offering, or even specializing in, adult content. Some BBSs were notorious for circulating scanned porn images with their names and dialup numbers added in the margins.

Many CD compilations of these files circulated throughout the 1990s to provide SysOps with content for their systems. They tended to be somewhat lazy and more poorly curated than the more "legitimate" software compilation CDs. Smutware is an example of one of these, a collection of several pornographic still photo sets, many with BBS advertisements visible. It's a bit unusual for also including "movies" - actually animations created for playback with the GRASP programming language runtime, these likely started life as FLI files created with Autodesk Animator. You'll need a DOS emulator and the GRASPRT.EXE runtime from the image viewers directory to view these.

Incidentally, it *is* "GIF of a girl in a bikini" and not "JPG of a girl in a bikini", since this collection predates the introduction of the JPEG format. Users downloading these files from their BBS would have to be willing to endure the slow modem downloads of these larger files.

The "SVGA" directories within Smutware contain 1024x768 256-color images, and the "VGA" directories contain 640x480 256-color images.
