Well, going on three years now since the last post here. Not sure why this echo doesn't get any attention. I know there are other Slackers still out there. Let's hear something from ya!

    I'm thinking 15.1 can't be more than 6 months away now... ;-)

I think Patrick said he was trying to return to a 2 year release cycle. Considering they are past the 3 year mark, you would think they are about to release or at least thinking about it.

I have not used Slackware seriously since the release of Slackware 15.0. I wonder why you think release is imminent, though.

Well, nothing solid, really. Part of it is how we are *WELL* past the (possible but not confirmed) desire to get back on the 2-year schedule.
Also I've seen some chatter in a couple of IRC channels from people I
know to have some valid information. The word is that we're waiting for KDE/Plasma v6 and once that happens the release will soon follow.
Nothing for sure, of course, and honestly I have no idea about KDE
progress, as I don't use it and haven't looked into it lately.

I've actually moved away from Slack some, as I'm running MX Linux (with
no systemd) on my main daily driver laptop, and I have a Pi4 running
various tasks for me (on RaspiOS). I still do have a file server
running Slackware 15.0, and my BBS runs on -current. The reason that
one is on -current is that it has new enough hardware that X won't even
run on it with 15.0. Other software is very stale too.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. ;-)

... Gone crazy, be back later, please leave message.

I'm running Slackware 15.0 on my main BBS system. I have updated it several times with security patches that came out after 15.0 was released.

I also have a Devuan Linux 5/daedalus system running that I use for testing MBSE BBS with Debian derived distributions. I chose Devuan because it is one of the few Debian type distributions that doesn't force using systemd.

    I'm thinking 15.1 can't be more than 6 months away now... ;-)

    We can certainly hope...

Yep always a good idea to keep up with the security updates. I
certainly do that too with my remaining Slackware systems.

    force using systemd.

I also generally try to avoid systemd. About a year ago I've started
using "MX Linux" as my daily driver OS. It's derived from MEPIS/AntiX
and was (the last time I looked) the "leading" Linux distro on Distrowatch.com. I know that doesn't mean a whole lot... But it is
very nice, with some nice "tools" to make some tasks easier, and it's Debian-based so you get the apt stuff, but no systemd. I've really come
    to like it a lot.

    I'm thinking 15.1 can't be more than 6 months away now... ;-)

    We can certainly hope...

And unfortunately that's about all we CAN do. Getting any actual "news"
is just not gonna happen. I've always thought Patrick could/should do
better with "marketing" his product, but I guess he doesn't care much
about that side of things. As I said in a post yesterday, my BBS is
running on -current at the moment, as it's newer hardware and X will not
run on it with 15.0. Kernel support for the video hardware, I'm pretty
sure, and of course it could be overcome with a newer custom-compiled
kernel. While I used to do that all the time, it's been years and I
just don't want to remember how to mess with that any more. I don't
update it because it's quite likely something will break as a result, so
I'm hoping to use 15.1 eventually and get on a normal security/update
    schedule again.

Somebody tell Patrick we're getting impatient... ;-)

Heh, Patrick's comunity management is abysmal. Thankfully, Slackers pick Slackware for other reasons than Patrick's PR skills.

In practical terms you can use Slackware -release for servers and Slackware -current for workstations and 95% of the times you will be fine. I think the current release model is built on this asumption. It is lame because it means Slackware is de facto a rolling distribution when used for desktops, but at least -current is well maintained.

Really, reason #1 why I moved from Slackware into OpenBSD is that OpenBSD has a clear release model and technical changes and goals are discussed in the open. Since it is not prone to be infected by the new shiny-thing of the day the Linux world generates it means it won't have weird stuff inserted into its ecosystem from one day to the next.

IO and hardware support suck, though.

    He knows.
