Such is the ferocity of his intent that van der Poel has cut a forlorn figure in the lead-up to a race at which he could make history. Only Roger De Vlaeminck and Tom Boonen have ever won four editions of the Paris-Roubaix,
and neither of them did so in consecutive years.

Mads Pedersen joined them on the podium 12 months ago, and will likely battle for third with Wout van Aert, Jasper Philipsen, Filippo Ganna and Jonathan Milan.
