Im really pleased that I managed to complete todays search without resorting to a hint, because I know absolutely nothing about Tolkeins world, having never seen/read any of the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit films/books.

That said, I must know something as I found the very middling MIDDLEEARTH spangram almost immediately, quickly followed by the top half of the grid.

Thankfully, SHIRE and RING apart, all of the words felt pretty common to the fantasy genre. Yesterday's NYT Strands answers (Friday, December 5, game

Strands is the NYT's not-so-new-any-more word game, following Wordle and Connections. It's now a fully fledged member of the NYT's games stable that has been running for a year and which can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
