• How to handle email?

From Greyhawk@21:2/166 to All on Sat Jan 3 14:50:58 2026
So, I'm running Mystic v1.12 a48 on a Win10-32bit VM. I think I've got most of it running well and consistant. At this point, I am interested in doing some sort of auto-validation via sending a code to the on-record email address and having it validated.

I see in the menu choices a "-V Validate e-mail address" command. The instructions I've gathered area little vague about its use, but from what I gather, when selected, the board will email the user at the address given at login and they respond with the code given. Sounds simple enough.

    - Now, how would I go about setting up the BBS software to use an email address?
    - Do I need to run/host an email server or can I run it through gmail/proton?

    - What would be the procedure to do that?
    - Where does the code get entered back into on the board?
    - Is there a MPL or door that handles this better than the internal routines?

So, how are y'all handling this on Mystic? My last attempt at this was some 32 years ago and I had a door that dialed back the user and they had to answer it and type in their login info. It worked back then, but was cumbersome for some less technically inclined users.

    Thanks for any insights.

I think i'm one of those kind of users too - I can't seem to get my head around how this is implemented. I went through the previous messages, and while I kind of get the concept on how it works - I just cant get my head around the implmentation of it.

Anyone got a good reference to go through on how to implment? I feel prelogin is the best place for it, but still....can't work my head around it..

For the answer to the other questions, I recommend smtp2go as a go to external smtp mailer..never fails me. I wouldn't bother hosting off the server - you'll get better successful mail sending results when through a third party mailer.

This is an interesting question. I am slowly going through setting up my BBS, but this is on my todo list ... Unless you figure it out before me, once I am on this task I will definitely let you know.

Ahhh, feeling a bit stupid now. I keep forgetting - multiple actions on a selection...

    So:

    1. Mystic Config --> Editors --> Menu Editor
    2. Default Theme --> New Info
    3. Edit "ENTER"
    4. Tab down to actions list and insert an action
    5. Make this action the top one. Set the action to:

    Command: -V
    Data: 20
    Access: s10
    Grid Event: Selected

Save all that like you normally would.

So now what happens is that a new user goes through the normal setup process. THen when they go to the complete applicaiton page with the ENTER /! options, they hit ENTER. When they press enter, it then sends an email to their email account with a code - that they then enter.

Then zips them across to send the sysop an email. Then they log in - and have access level 20. Obviously change that to whatever your elevated access level is for validated users.

Hope this helps - and hope someone can correct me if I'm wrong!

... This is not a drill. Unless it is. In which case, it's a very poor drill.

    Hi zarniwoop,

    I did all this:
    1. Mystic Config --> Editors --> Menu Editor
    2. Default Theme --> New Info
    3. Edit "ENTER"
    4. Tab down to actions list and insert an action
    5. Make this action the top one. Set the action to:

    Access: s10
    Grid Event: Selected

Under Activation List I just have the -V (Validate Email Address).

But when I hit enter on the registration screren, it just keeps on showing it to me again and again, redrawing the same screen ...

I tried with leaving Gogo main menu next, but in that casse it just goes straight there ...

Should we have "Goto some other menu" first, where one can enter email info?

I must be missing something ...

    Tnx,

So on the new info menu options, you should have ENTER and !

I then went into ENTER, then action list and added the -V (as my original message).

Under that, you should still have a (GO) to main menu

Sounds like that might not be there now?
