Spotify, the largest music streaming platform in the world with hundreds of millions of active users, and an extensive library of music has allegedly been hacked by Anna's Archive. The shadow library, who labels itself as archivists, has apparently scraped nearly the entirety of the platform, downloading roughly 300 TB of music that is now being distributed illegally via torrents.

I suppose it's pretty easy to scrape tunes once one "registers"
a free Spotify account. I can see Spotify now nolonger
    offering the free version.

"According to Anna's Archive, [...] the most popular songs are
in a 160kbps quality, while less listened tracks have been
    shrunk to 75kbps."

    160kbps sucks!

I wonder if they're less listened to because they're 75kpbs or the other way around. It'd be interesting to see the statistics.

I understood the report to mean that Anna's has reduced the
quality of its skimmed copies to 160 or 75 based on its
assessment on popularity. It doesn't sound like Anna's has or
is offering the 320kbs or higher versions at all.

    Ah ok, that makes sense.

Tho I'm kinda shit scared to try to download even part of this for
curiosity. You bet Spotify have people watching every torrent tracker
out there for IPs. I once got a warning from Verizon for downloading
something from some obscure band. I wanted to hear a couple of tracks
before I pumped out for the album. This was before organized streaming
stuff. Decided not to in the end :)

Yes, I could get a VPN but I am not sure it's worth paying for just for
    a look.

    Ah ok, that makes sense.

Spotify offers two quality levels. The lowest is 256kbps.

That is strange. Was it a torrent?

Windscribe has a free level that offers 10GB/mo.

Although recently, I think they are blocking known tracker IPs.
